Slow Horses Season 6 Is Coming And We Don't Deserve Gary Oldman
Persona #3 · Vol: 2000
If you're one of the twelve people who still hasn't watched *Slow Horses*, congratulations on having a social life. The rest of us have been mainlining this show like it's the last oxygen tank on the Titanic, and Apple TV+ just confirmed that Season 6 is officially happening. That's right, folks — the streaming service that cancels nothing and greenlights everything has decided to keep the one genuinely excellent show it has. Somewhere, a Netflix executive just choked on their kombucha.
For the uninitiated, *Slow Horses* follows the glorious disaster that is Slough House, a MI5 dumping ground where Britain's worst spies go to drink, sulk, and accidentally save the country. It's like *The Office*, except instead of paper sales, it's national security, and instead of Michael Scott, it's Gary Oldman looking like he crawled out of a dumpster and decided to stay there. Jackson Lamb, Oldman's character, is a flatulent, chain-smoking, borderline-feral genius who would sell your grandmother for a pack of cigarettes but would also, begrudgingly, die for his team. He's the anti-James Bond. He's what happens when you give up on the gym, personal hygiene, and basic human decency but somehow retain a photographic memory and a willingness to commit felonies.
Season 6 will adapt *Joe Country*, the sixth novel in Mick Herron's excellent book series. If you haven't read them, first of all, what are you doing with your life? Second of all, *Joe Country* is widely considered the darkest entry in the series. We're talking fewer laughs, more body bags. The stakes get personal, the betrayals get spicy, and someone from the Slough House family is going to have a very bad time. My money's on Roddy Ho finally getting what's coming to him, but the man is a cockroach with WiFi — he'll survive the apocalypse and still ask if you've seen his Bitcoin portfolio.
The show has been a critical darling since Day 1, which is Hollywood code for "nobody watches it but the people who do won't shut up about it." It's the TV equivalent of a craft beer that's too hoppy — deeply satisfying, slightly pretentious, and impossible to explain to your relatives at Thanksgiving. Apple TV+ knows this. They also know that Gary Oldman could read a grocery list and make it sound like a Shakespearean monologue about the futility of existence. Hand him a role where he gets to insult everyone within a five-mile radius while solving international conspiracies? That's not acting, that's a public service.
So what can we expect from Season 6? More of the same, hopefully. More River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) getting punched in the face for being a good person. More Kristin Scott Thomas being terrifying in a pantsuit. More of Lamb weaponizing his own repulsiveness as a tactical advantage. And yes, more of the show's signature trick: making you laugh your head off for 50 minutes and then ripping your heart out in the last 10. It's a formula, but it works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just add more swearing and existential dread.
**The Bottom Line:** *Slow Horses* is proof that you can make a spy thriller without glamour, gadgets, or a main character who looks good in a tuxedo. It's grimy, it's mean, and it's absolutely brilliant. Season 6 can't come soon enough. In the meantime, go read the books. Or don't. Lamb wouldn't care either way, and honestly, that's the whole appeal.
