Annie Dillard's 50-Year-Old Warning Is Going Viral

Persona #2 ยท Vol: 1000
okay so nobody had "a 1974 nature essay breaking the internet" on their 2025 bingo card but here we are fr ๐Ÿซ  so basically everyone on my fyp is quoting this lady annie dillard and i had to go investigate. she's this american author who wrote a book called *Pilgrim at Tinker Creek* back in 1974 when she was like 29. girl was just out in virginia staring at creeks and bugs and somehow predicted our entire collective brain rot five decades early. the roman empire could NEVER. the quote going nuclear rn is from her essay "Total Eclipse" and it goes something like: you're basically asleep your whole life until something shakes you awake. and then the vibe is that most of us are walking around in a fog, doomscrolling, dissociating, whatever. she said the secret is to be awake. like actually awake. present. locked in. ๐Ÿ˜ญ and listen, the algorithm ate this UP. because we're all out here living the same day on loop. wake up, scroll, work, scroll, sleep. dillard was out there in the 70s doing the exact same thing except with trees instead of tiktok. she literally wrote that we should "spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away." GIRL. that's the most gen z thing i've ever read and she was born in 1945. here's the wild part though. dillard wasn't some chill nature girlie. she was UNHINGED in the best way. she wrote about watching a frog get its insides sucked out by a giant water bug and being fascinated. she nearly went blind staring at a solar eclipse because she was too stunned to look away. she once said she wanted to "live so as to have a story to tell." that's not a nature writer that's a main character. ๐Ÿ’… and the internet is doing what the internet does. people are making edits of her quotes over rain sounds. someone made a "dillardcore" playlist. there's a whole trend of people going outside for exactly one hour with no phone and reporting back like it's a mission to mars. one girl said she stared at a leaf for 20 minutes and cried. honestly? valid. but here's why it's actually hitting different. dillard's whole thing wasn't "touch grass and be happy." it was darker. she said beauty and horror are the same thing. that we're all just "waking up" over and over and most of the time we miss it. she wasn't selling a wellness retreat. she was saying pay attention or your life is just gonna scroll past you. and that's lowkey terrifying and also the realest thing i've read all year. so yeah. a woman who's been dead to the algorithm for decades is now the internet's favorite philosopher because she figured out the thing we're all scared of. that we're not really here. and the fix isn't a new app or a better routine. it's just looking up. ๐Ÿ‘€ **take:** annie dillard is proof that the old heads were onto something and we should probably log off and go stare at a creek. but also i fully expect this to be forgotten by friday so screenshot it and go outside. she would want that.
